Eat • Reserve • Get there
Eating in Zanzibar swings between grilled seafood straight off the dhow, Swahili curries heavy with cardamom and coconut, and a handful of destination restaurants worth planning a whole evening around. Below are the venues RAFIKI works with directly — you can request a table and arrange the ride in the same place.
Two things shape dinner here that nobody tells you in advance. The first is the tide: on the east coast, restaurants built over the water are reached on foot at low tide and by boat at high tide, so the booking time matters more than the cuisine. The second is transport — most beach roads have no passing taxis after dark, so arrange the ride when you book the table rather than afterwards.
The destination restaurants fill up days ahead in July, August, December and January. Everywhere else, a same-day request is usually fine, and venues confirm or decline rather than leaving you guessing.
For the well-known destination restaurants, yes — especially in high season. Most beach kitchens take walk-ins, but a reservation still saves you a wait at sunset.
Book the ride with the table. Beach roads have very little passing traffic after dark, and a RAFIKI driver can wait or return for you at an agreed time.
Grilled seafood and octopus, Swahili fish curry, biryani or pilau, urojo soup, and Zanzibar pizza and sugar-cane juice at the Forodhani night market in Stone Town.
